The North

One week in October, working north through coast, forest and frozen lake. Sequenced in the order the days came, which is also the order the light kept getting shorter.

Seen from the passenger seat, a young man with a cropped beard and a hoop earring drives in a black t-shirt, looking down the road while dark green forest streaks past the window behind him.Photographed from directly overhead, a full-size green football pitch fills a small rocky island, ringed by autumn scrub, timber drying racks and deep navy sea on every side.A lone figure in a dark hooded coat stands on a broad shelf of wet rock, facing a row of jagged mountain peaks across a grey sea under a low bank of sunset cloud.A close profile of a bearded man laughing hard in the shadowed cab of a vehicle, with a bright window behind him showing blurred green and grey landscape going past.An empty two-lane road curves away between snow banks, flanked by frost-covered pines and birches under a pale blue winter sky.A narrow wooden jetty runs straight away from the viewer across a frozen, snow-dusted lake, its far end dissolving into white fog where the shoreline should be.Bare birches trail their branches over a field under a thin first snow, with a small dark timber footbridge crossing a stream mid-frame and mist hanging in the trees beyond.
